Yes, rumors about my obsession with luxurious fibers are true. Some of you already know that I knit all of my own woolies and other goodies that I use at my newborn sessions. It really is an addiction of sorts! It’s pretty rare that I show up to a newborn session without something brand spankin’ new to use in my bag. I stopped fighting it ages ago, and now when I see a yarn that I must have, I give in to temptation and just buy it, knowing full well that I will never, ever be able to knit through my entire stash in this lifetime. Ah well, my obsession becomes my clients’ gain! I’ve tried and experimented several different designs since I started specializing in newborns, but I always find that my favorites all follow the same theme—soft, delicate, and luxurious. This year I am all about creating soft knits with a soft color palette (think: cashmere, alpaca, suri merino, mohair, silk, soft bouclé. I’m hoping to find new ways to best showcase the beauty of the baby. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about? Even though I love creating these items, I never want my photos to be about me or my creations. If people look at an image of mine and don’t first notice the baby’s soft skin, or her downy head of hair, or those puckery and kissable lips, then I have failed at my task. It should always, always be about the most beautiful creation on this earth–the newborn. And if after taking all that in people happen to notice the soft, sweet blanket she’s swaddled in, well that’s just fine with me too.
